Agate, also called banded chalcedony, is a mineral belonging to the quartz family - sharing the hardness of 7. Agates were first recorded and named in Italy from the river Achetes in Sicily. They were used by many civilizations including Neolithic people & Egyptians, as early as 3,000 BC. They have also been used in jewelry in ancient India, and Germany from 15th-19th century. Crystal healers believe that agates help stabilize energy. These also have a chunk of amethyst in the middle. Amethyst is said that it can help facilitate the transmission of lower frequency into higher energies & opens up the Third Eye & Crown chakras - perfect for meditation. Emotionally, it is thought to help one find the root of their causes behind certain thought patterns or behaviors such as addictions. Throughout ancient history it has been used to promote sobriety. Amethyst is purple in color due to irradiation inside the earth, impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals, and the presence of other trace elements, which result in complex crystal lattices.
These bookends are from Brazil where they were mined, cut and polished into the bookend shape. They are polished on the inside and the front face with everything else left raw, the base is cut but unpolished. The back side even has a little cave with crystals filing the inside!! See last photo. I also love how many rainbows are hiding in theses, absolutely gorgeous.
They weigh 11 lb 2 oz!! and measure together approximately 9 x 3.5 x 6 inches.
