Optical Calcite, also known as Iceland spar, is a calcium carbonate. It is rather unique among the calcites. It contains no impurities, so it’s nearly colorless and transparent to both visible and ultraviolet light. Originally found in Iceland that is where it got its name. It has been used for centuries, even used by the Vikings who called Iceland spar a ‘sunstone’ because the polarizing effect can be used to find the direction of the sun even in dense fog and overcast conditions.
Energetically it is said to help cleanse & provide clarity to those who work & meditate with it. It activates the upper chakras (energy centers) of the body & sometimes referred to as the stone of the mind - thought to help one to analyze, improves memory & helps with learning.
They produce a double refracted affect - you can read / see through Optical Clear Calcite however if you twist it will appear as if its double picturing. When light passes through this transparent Calcite it bends two ways, making images appear double. Scientist are actually using optical calcite to create a real life invisibility cloak of sorts! (seriously google it) You can also shine a laser through it to see how it refracts light in many directions. Not only is it gorgeous & full of rainbows but it forms to its fullest in this natural parallelogram shape.
This particular piece of Optical Calcite is from the earth in Mexico. It is completely raw and unpolished. Very hard to capture their true beauty in photos, so many rainbows. This one is the only one that has a honey hue to it in some lighting! One side has some texture, while the rest are very smooth, It weighs just under 1.8oz and measures about 2 x 1.5 x 1 inches.
**This is a soft stone it should not be added to the bath or get wet. It is best traveled with wrapped up to stay unharmed.
