White Sage, also known as Salvia apiana, bee sage, or sacred sage, is an evergreen perennial shrub that is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, found mainly in the coastal sage scrub habitat of Southern California and Baja California. This Sage has been used traditionally throughout several different cultures with the focus on purification. Many Native American tribes use it as a part of their religion and unfortunately "wildcrafting" of this powerful plant has put it under threat in its local habitat, with many people harvesting it from nature reserves illegally. Although the species, Salvia apiana, is not yet classified as threatened, United Plant Savers, a conservation nonprofit, has placed it on its to watch list. You can learn more about it in this recent Vice article here (with our supplier interviewed!).
Our organic white sage is sourced from a sustainable and ethical grow in San Diego County, California. Ellen & Ken, a 75 year old married couple, are the owners of Sage Winds Farm, a 40 acre organic farm. They started growing sage from seeds in 2010 and Ellen and Ken to this day hand harvest, hand bundle, and hand tie dye the hemp string holding together this beautiful organic sage. It is certified USDA organic, the first sage farm since 2013. Sustainably grown, always, without the use of harmful chemicals and done in the most nurturing loving way.
