Selenite Properties & Uses

Selenite Properties & Uses

Selenite is named after the Greek goddess of the Moon, Selene, and has a mesmerizing soft pearlescent glow - which is why we call it "Moon Glow" in our online crystal shop!

Where is Selenite found?

Selenite is a variety of crystallized gypsum that forms as an evaporate in clay beds, salt flats, hot springs and caves. It is found on every continent, with rich deposits in Morocco, Australia, Greece, the United States (you can even mine Hourglass Selenite in Oklahoma!), and most notably the Naica Mine's Cave in Chihuahua, Mexico.

What is Selenite?

It is often grouped together with other gypsum varieties such as desert rose, gypsum flower, satin spar, and alabaster; but Selenite is recognizable by the tabular or columnar shape it typically grows in and striations running the length of the crystal.

This crystal structure is known as Monoclinic - meaning it forms a rectangular prism with a parallelogram shape as its base.

Selenite is generally white, gray, colorless, or even presents as iridescent shades of blue and green sometimes. It is a soft stone (2 on Mohs hardness scale), and one that should be treated with extreme care near other crystals, water and sharp objects. Learn more about caring for crystals and minerals here.

What is Selenite used for?

It is said that the ancient Greeks used Selenite minerals as windows to amplify the moonlight so they could see more clearly, which are still common uses for Selenite today.

Selenite is thought to offer protection of one's aura, energy and environment, and to cleanse blockages in meditation, aiding to lift one's awareness to higher planes of inner experience.

What is the energy of Selenite?

Selenite is known as an energy amplifier, and is commonly used to magnify the energy of other crystals, either in a grid or as a charging plate.

Selenite is often seen in a wand shape, and is one of the most popular crystals used by healers to activate the third eye and crown chakras.

How to use Selenite:

Incorporate Selenite wands and palm stones in a crystal grid, bring a chunk into your favorite room to add a natural "moon glow" to the space, line your shared walls / windows of your home to add a layer of energetic protection. (We always enclose our New Moon Circle with large selenite rods!)

"A Selenite wand pointed at the third eye sends energy that can feel like a gust of wind going through the forehead and out the top of the head." - Robert Simmons, The Book Of Stones
